Ring of 14

This is a circle made up of 14 repeats of Johnson solid 89 - the hebesphenomegacorona. It takes 406 rods, 140 balls and 28 square panels. There are also two feet which take a further 14 rods. It's quite easy to build by lying it on its side and adding one solid at a time.

Nice job.

By coincidence I'm busy with amongst others the 'ring of 13 antiprisms' (at least that's what I think they're called) at the moment.
Pictures next week.

Andrew & Helen,

Kudos - I had looked for and failed to find that ring.

How close is it? I can't see any visible distortion. Is it strong?
Can you pick it up?

You've got to think that your ring of 14 must be related to my

Thanks for your reply. It certainly looks similar to your ring - the outside edge of the ring looks the same, but is rotated relative to the inner ring of squares compared to mine. I think yours uses fewer rods, but it does look as if the main angles must be same, in which case the gap would have been the same too. It was maybe 5mm, and it took a bit of massaging the thing into shape in order to close all the gaps, but I think I got rid of them all. The end result is quite strong and can certainly be carried around quite easily.

The ring from andrewandhelenpage with fourteen J89 has quite a large gap compared to the siamese ring of karlhorton.

Here are some pictures of 3D models. I have aligned the gaps in both pictures, one is almost indiscernable.
