Twist girder

Postby Peter Jepsen » Tue Mar 02, 2010 5:51 pm

Hello all, this is a Flickr re-post from 2009.

"While working on something else, I stumbled over this shape. For lack of another name, it resembled a kind of girder that gently twists and thus I named it so.
It's hollow like a tube but closed at the ends. Closing the structure at the ends makes it completely rigid.
I don't have time to experiment at the moment so I'm putting it out for sharing for anyone who wants to have a go at experimenting."

If I can find some time I'll mess around with the concept. I feel like I stumbled upon something similar quite a while ago but never could figure out anything to make out of it. Not sure I can tell exactly how to recreate the twist from these camera angles though. We shall see...

Peter, how do you post this kind of pictures??
Is that a kind of program you have that you use to build virtualy?
If that's so, what program is it?

Regarding the software, "Geomag CAD" if you will.
It's a proprietary software which is in unstable Beta state and neither available nor ready for public use. The file format is proprietary so I can't share the model files. And with my new computer I cannot even get it to work anymore..
The project was halted and ended up in limbo and at the moment there are no definitive plans to continue development.
I'd personally like the software to be finished but it's a low priority for the company, the focus being on the KIDS and Gbaby lines at the moment. There is a faint hope but I wouldn't hold my breath for it..

For the new pro and KIDS packaging, we did the 3D modelling in Autodesk Inventor and then had the models exported and rendered in 3D Studio Max.

That's such a shame Peter :(

I've been having a play with LDD (Lego Digital Designer - for those who haven't heard of it)

Would be wonderful to have something similar for Geomag 8-)

So this is the post when the renders and the software Geomag CAD appear for the first time, isn't it ?
What happened to this software in the end ? Did it ever get out of beta version ?
As I suspected, many pictures from the boxes were actually high quality renders with industrial softwares.

The general shape is made of two Snub Disphenoids that are linked together by the twisted tube. Based on this observation, I have elongated the shape some more.

Here are the 3D models.
