I agree: great shame Peter, that the Geomag company couldn't let out the beta
software for feedback ... I mean Google lets beta software out all the time! and
look how well they are doing.

Graham, there is a program that does some of what we want, called "Stella",
written by Robert Webb.

It doesn't, however, allow arbitrary assembling of pieces, which is what
we want here: a kind of LegoCAD for Geomag. But you can render images
of the standard polyhedra in a ball and rod form.

It's also rather expensive - I've only used the trial because of that.

Ummm, I own a registered full copy Great Stella -- and it's not nearly that expensive!!

http://www.software3d.com/Purchase.php says it's $65 for the full version. I received it as a gift for Xmas '07, when it was $59.

Some things in Great Stella can be kinda awkward, but it makes up for that by being all about playing with polyhedra. And it has a nice built-in library of intriguing polyhedra as well.

I used Great Stella to make the picture below (previously posted on the Geomag Wiki):
