So I decided to expand on my original solution. First, here is a better picture with green bars illustrating the solution:

The nice thing about this is it's expandable, and the external silver tetrahedra provide additional sturdiness and support:

So now I decided to take a more 3-dimensional route and join 3 segments together in a triangular orientation. This form isn't quite as sturdy as the tower:

I don't supose this constructions stands for the challenge... Maybe i have missed the "fewer then 30 rods...?? :D
