It's partially an optical illusion in that while it seems that each layer is only connected at 2 edges of a square, one column of the bars is truly what the structure is resting on at each corner (and as such, there's quite a lot of magnets that work together to hold up the next layer).
I do not have the pieces to try another layer, or else I would love to try it. Essentially, I figure that if it doesn't work with the 5-bar tall layers, making those layers taller will mean more magnets to hold up the layers above, so I'm willing to bet that an extra layer is possible. It's just a matter of figuring out how tall the layer has to be in order to support the (now heavier) layers above itself.
