How to : 5 Intersecting Tetrahedra...

Step 1. Create yourself a rather nice Dodecahedron.
Image

Step 2. To help it keep its shape, add some support.

Step 3. Start poking the rods through creating a pyramid at a time inside the dodecahedron (make sure you use the main points not the support points)

Step 4. Remove your outer dodecahedron and marvel at your genius 8-)

Yeah, this is so nice. I wish we could build it with the longer KIDS rods too..

Incidentally, the exterior support grid I use is the complete opposite of yours. Basically what is seen on your second photo minus what is seen on the first photo, then slightly inflated. AKA the Rhombic Triacontahedron. Ref. Golden Rhombus

That looks so cool. I can't figure out how to make it though.

It was a tough one!

I wasn't sure I would get to the end. I almost gave up halfway through the 2nd tetrahedron. I left it overnight and it went better this morning ;-)
You have to be very precise, well focused and accept that the junctions between the rods and the spheres are not good at the vertices of the tetrahedra as long as the outer supporting structure is present during the construction process.
I had to correct 4 or 5 edge-crossings at the very end to make it homogeneous.

I'm glad I didn't let go. Is it worth it!

Building process... What a mess!!! Don't give up!

That's fantastic Eric :-D

Yes I had many failed attempts at getting it right the first time :-)

I finally got my hands on enough transparent orange rods (long quest on the second-hand market) :D :D :D

For those how didn't make the connection, it has been discussed a long time ago in this thread ;-)
Where you can find Amafirlian's alternate method of building using the Rhombic Triacontahedron as well as Peter's trick of using Rhombus panels.

This model is also called : Compound of five tetrahedra.
