Heptagonal curved ring

Postby karlhorton » Mon Nov 02, 2009 9:58 pm

Here's a seven sided ring: it's fairly easy to build but
a small child destroyed mine before I could verify whether
it could be made to stand upright.

Any takers to rebuild and find out?

Each side is slightly curved, so you must use four panels
per side for the corners to work out. The corners themselves are
simply octahedra.

There are some fun calculations to do to make this all work out,
but I'll post them to the Math forum.

When trying to stand on different types of legs, it cracked.

I'm taking this as a challenge - find the support mechanism to allow this ring to stand on edge.

(see the 96 tetrahedra model - it was tricky finding the right support points)

Hey there,
I have tried making the 3d model using Stella software and I have realized that the ring does not mathematically closed itself, see the attached picture.
At the bottom, you can see that the two square pyramids overlap each other.
Hopefully, the tolerance and flexibility in the physical model make it work nicely anyway.
